“Smited United Mega Church” political art
Most Americans are aware that the general population of the US is the least-educated of all the Westernized nations, but few have ever stopped to consider how this might be affecting their own political views. There are some Americans who have never read the first book about Middle Eastern history or politics, yet they feel perfectly qualified to interpret The Book of Revelations to explain current events such as the Iraq War. Faith and inspiration are all well and good, but I don’t see them as any substitute for things like humility and taking the time to make sure you know what you are talking about. To live in the wealthiest country in the world and never take the time to read books or listen to people around the world is shameful. American Fundamentalists like to think of themselves as a chosen people, but I think they would do well to remember Christ’s parable of the talents: “Where much is given much is expected.” If we are a chosen people, I think Christ expects more of us than ignorance and smug indifference.
