It’s easy to explain why an artist would create so many versions of a theme or design.  After all, it usually takes some trial-and-error and a little exploration to capture the feeling or essence of an idea in a picture. But the real situation is that a single idea mutates over time, so really it is a collection of ideas.  Thus, you get all the variations, and an artist can spend a lifetime painting the “same” picture without getting tired of it.
