The Titans were the race of ancient gods that ruled the world before Zeus and the other Greek gods took over.  After defeating the Titans, the Greek gods created the human race to have someone to look down on.  Zeus left the humans just as he made them  –cold, naked and helpless against wild animals.  Zeus did this so that man would never be able to threaten the gods.  The Titan Prometheus found pity on the human race and gave them fire for food, warmth and protection.  This angered Zeus, so he chained Prometheus to a rock for all eternity where the buzzards could tear a hole in his side and eat his liver.
