“Medicine Wheel” Engravings

These are marble shards I engraved for my Solstice Door sculpture. Before I mounted the engravings in concrete on the sculpture, I played with different configurations and made a medicine wheel. The engravings were made from broken pieces of marble. I stained the engravings with oil pastel. The images on the engravings are from the dream time and my days as a boy playing behind the levee in the Mississippi Delta.

A shaman in the dream time maps the winter solstice by watching where a star sets
on the horizon and builds an serpent-shaped earthen mound to map the events.

A pole on the horizon is all that is needed to build a celestial calendar.
